Being Alpha also involves feeding your dog with a healthy diet. In todays market there is way too much "junk food" out there, all the big box stores carry your typical brands that are all pretty much the same and have high content of useless filler.  What we need to reconsider is what are dogs?? Are they herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores??  Open your dogs mouth and look at their teeth, what do they look like they were designed for?? 

I am not saying that kibble is not good, just which kibble. I have recommended to my clients Orijen, GO, and EVO. All have a high protein source derived from meat, and all have a little to no grains.

For those of you who want to take the ultimate step in diet and nutrition for your furry friend, consider a raw diet. I have been feeding Mickey and Jesse (my two labs) a raw diet for over a year now and have never looked back. The satisfaction they get from eating raw is phenominal, not to mention that their teeth are as clean as possible and no doggy breath. What is most important to me, is that they are as healthy as can be, and that tells me that I am doing the best for my friends.

I understand that there are many Vets in the community who will tell you otherwise, but there are also a few Holistic Vets who say different. I am not saying go and argue with your vet about the issue, but instead do your own research on the topic and make up your own mind. What we need to remember is that most of the nutritional information that is out there was done by large kibble manufacturers, and almost none on a raw diet. 

Keep this in mind, would you rather eat a processed food diet or one that is based on real natural foods that was made by mother nature?? So why are we feeding our dogs processed junk??

Tips for you and your dog

• Now that the winter is upon is, dog boots are a fantastic idea. With all the salt and chemicals for de-icing your dogs pads can really burn for them. If you see the salt out and your dog can walk in boots, put em on.
• If you can't get boots on your dude/ette, then use vaseline on the pads, and dont' be stingy with it because it will help seal the micro-lesions on their pads.
• REMEMBER - dogs can frost bite too, just think about how your buddy is doing when you are out for a walk in minus 20 degree weather, and I am not saying not to walk in the cold, just don't overdo it in really cold weather for dogs that spend a lot of time indoors.
